Designed for high school students in India, the course involves writing exercises in pairs, group work and solo, with an emphasis on experimentation, reaching for a new freedom in using language and (most of all), having fun with words. We will do this by means of the following
Close study and discussion of the work of some modern Indian, American and British poets writing in the English language.
Identifying the ‘ingredients’ of a successful poem? What makes it ‘work?’
The place of form, rhyme and metre in contemporary poetry.
How to ‘mine’ a poem and utilise its magic to find seeds we can ‘grow’ into original work of our own.
Group workshopping of students’ work and a finale which will offer an opportunity to share work in a supportive environment.
